Why do good men do nothing?

"All it takes
for evil to triumph
is for good men to do nothing."
-Edmund Burke

What I want to know is WHY do good men do nothing?!

Tonight I want to shout this question. I'm not talking about politics - at least not world politics. I'm talking about when 5 people are on a committee and two of them know that the two doing the most talking are dead wrong, why do they say nothing? Especially when they KNOW what the consequences will be for the group the committee is running.

Why do they say nothing?

I ask my husband this question a lot. He says "They won't listen." But wasn't John the Baptist "a voice crying in the wilderness." What about Jeremiah? Did anybody listen to him?

God told Ezekiel, "You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen."

So why are good men silent? Can they still be good if they do nothing?

Hi Laurie, Reading your post I rememberd the book "The Silence of Adam" from Lawrence J. Crabb. It's quite long time ago since I read it (in German) but he definitely speaks about being silent.

I'm not familiar with this book but I really like the rest of the title (I looked it up on the internet): "Becoming Men of Courage in a World of Chaos".

There's an old saying that I heard go around: "No good deed goes unpunished." There are consequences for doing good, but no one considers those consequences in light of the consequences of doing nothing.

I just saw a trailer for Batman Begins...there was a line 'all it takes for Gotham to crumble is for good men to do nothing...'

I think they have been reading your blog.

Batman! :-) Maybe that's what we need. A little humor to lighten the situation.
