Why I like "everybody"...

Our son, the best daughter-in-law ever and their two daughters have returned to home after a spring vacation in Aji and it's a little quiet around here tonight! But the up side is that I have my book back. I read a chapter in the ofuro tonight. This paragraph reminded me of another "son" of mine (my daughters say I collect sons!) complaining "but you like everybody":
The worldly man treats certain people kindly because he 'likes' them: the Christian, trying to treat everyone kindly, finds himself liking more and more people as he goes on - including people he could not even have imagined himself liking at the beginning.
C.S.Lewis "Mere Christianity"

You must be talking about me because I had told you that many a time. Anyway, as for myself, I always make the distinction between "like" and "love." When I like someone, I'm attracted to their personality and character and want to spend time with them. When I love someone, I'm willing to do something in the given person's best interest, as I perceive it to be. I could like and love someone, and I could dislike AND love someone, but I could never NOT love someone because our Lord has commanded us to even love our enemies, so, to me, that means willing to jump in front of a truck to save the life of someone I find incredibly annoying, and I would do that in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

Yes, I suppose I was talking about you. "-)

I agree there's difference. About liking, though... I find I really do "like - enjoy spending time with them, find their character and personality worth exploring" when I'm kind to them.

So the key to liking the unlikeable people in your life is to get serious - really serious -about loving them. You know be patient and kind and look for the good in them instead of the evil. And somewhere along the line you'll find that you not only love them, you can actually like them, too.
