That "new 畳(たたみ)” smell

I love the smell of new 畳 (tatami - rice mats)! After 11 years, last week my husband finally broke down and changed the covering for the mats in our bedroom. (Yes, that's our bedroom. We just put the bed in the closet every morning!) This was an act of love - he had to unscrew the bookshelf from the wall as well as move all the furniture. (There's a heavy desk and filing cabinet at the other end of the room.)

My beautiful new floor!
I love the smell of new rice mats! And I love my husband!

Tatami is a lovely material.

Did you always like the smell of new tatami? At first I didn't (thought it smelled like cat pee - sorry!) but I have grown to love it. The room looks fabulous.

I love reading your blog.

Thank you, Linda. I'm glad you enjoy my blog. :-)

Hmmm... Its kind of hard to remember the beginning of my life here now. I think I've always enjoyed the smell of new tatami. However, I will admit that the smell of old tatami in a hotel or ryokan might resemble the odious smell you mention.

Oh yeah... and you're so right, Matthew! I like to use the goza mats for sitting on at picnics. Its smells a bit like a hayfield. Clean hay!
