Paul's "Method" for Sanctification

Reading Her Bible

Paul's "method" for sanctifications is biblical doctrine. That is to live as Christians we must know what God has done to us in making us Christians. We must know what has happened, and the only way we can know what has happened to us is to know the Bible. Then, because we know what God has done to us, we are to go on with God, acting on the basis of what has happened to us and in us. We can express it in this way: We cannot go back to being what we were before. We are new creatures in Christ, the only thing we can do is get on with living the Christian life. In other words, there is no way for us to go but forward.

- James Montgomery Boice's "Whatever Happened to the Gospel of Grace? Rediscovering the Doctrines That Shook the World"

I guess I grew up thinking differently. My understanding of sanctification isn't as much of an intellectual acknoweledgement, though I suppose that does play a part. I understand sanctification to come from our willingness to carry the cross, walking daily with Jesus and in essence saying "I choose You over my own will." Sanctification may begin with an intellectual acknowledgement but it must end in practical obedience - often a painful reality - or our faith never was true faith.

Believe me, Mr. Boice believes in the exactly the same sort of obedience! That's why I like his books!
