My husband and I agreed the other day that much of our fatigue at the present stems not from lack of sleep (although that is a factor!) but from all the choices we have to make as we break out of routine and travel to North America on this Home Assignment.
When should we go? We chose April – and now with yet another couple in ministry leaving the area we wonder why we chose this month when people traditionally leave! (The way my husband does the reckoning, that’s nearly half the Christian workers in our work group.)
What tickets should we buy? The cheapest. But which ones are those? And is it still cheaper if I have to stay overnight in Korea? And will I be any use to anyone when I get there if I bus up from New York? Or will I be a basket case?
What should I pack? When should we visit which church? We can’t see ALL of our friends and relatives - so who has priority?
Gradually we’ve been making choices… but its been tiring. And its way too easy to waste time replaying the them. Did I do the right thing? Should I have done the other thing instead?
Don’t get me wrong! like to have a choice!
I just prefer to have less of them at one time.
And then this afternoon it came to me, one of the things that enriches my life is an “organizing principle”: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
I spent a few minutes - a very few minutes in view of all that needs to be done before I catch that first train tomorrow! - reviewing the Soapbox archive from February 2005.
When I look back I see how “rich” this way of choosing has made me! Perhaps I’m not rich by the world’s standards. But in the things that really matter – I’m rich, VERY rich!

I totally sympathise with how tiring the home assignment choices thing is - we´ve had to travel "home" a lot more often than we expected in the last couple of years and there are so many choices every time.. Praying for peace in it all for you.
